How Long Will An FUE Hair Transplant Last?

Hair Transplant Treatment

Many patients ask us how long the results of their FUE hair transplant procedure will last. An FUE hair transplant is a permanent solution for hair loss. However, everyone is different, and sometimes the results will last less time than others.

An FUE hair transplant procedure is when individual hair follicles are taken from the back of the patient’s scalp (also called the donor area) and are then transplanted into the balding area. Many of the follicles will be successfully implanted and provide a restored full head of hair, but some minor shedding may occur in the first few weeks following the transplant.

The back of the scalp is known as the “donor area”. This is because of the permanent nature of these hair follicles that are not affected by DHT and therefore provide better donor follicles than any other area of the scalp.

What Is DHT?

DHT (dihydrotesterone) is a metabolite that is found in the body, and it’s the main cause of hair loss in both men and women. The hairs on the back and some area on the sides of the scalp are immune to DHT, which means that those hairs will not fall out because of this androgen.

How Permanent is an FUE Hair Transplant?

An FUE hair transplant is a permanent solution to hair loss if done correctly. The hair follicles that are taken from the donor area are not genetically programmed to fall out, so they will continue to stay put even after being transplanted.

Why Are the Hair Follicles Permanent?

When the follicles are transplanted to the balding areas of the scalp, they attach themselves to the cells around them and are fed by regular blood flow the same way that they were before being transplanted.

During the first few weeks following a hair transplant, the transplanted hairs will fall out. Although the hairs have fallen out, the transplanted follicles remain and will start to regrow new hairs after a few months. Patience is very important, but the results of an FUE hair transplant will leave you with a fuller, thicker head of hair that will last you the rest of your life.

We Use Your Hair

Because the procedure uses your own hair from your scalp, the results are very natural. The ability to have hairstyle options and not be depressed about your hair loss are the most positive results of an FUE hair transplant.

How Long Does an FUE Hair Transplant Take?

A standard FUE procedure can take up to 12 to 14 hours. The procedure is lengthy because the grafts of hair are removed and transplanted one at a time.

Does an FUE Hair Transplant Hurt?

Pain management is one of the most important features that we want to provide to all of our patients.

At the Toronto Hair Transplant Clinic, a local anaesthetic is used in both the recipient and donor areas. We also provide pain killers and sedatives to help with any discomfort throughout the day.
