Hair Care And Styling After A Hair Transplant

Hair Care & Styling

A very common question that we get from a lot of patients is how they can treat the newly transplanted hairs that have started to grow in the once-balding area of the scalp.

When considering a hair loss treatment, one of the main motivating factors that a patient has in mind is to get back to a certain look. Most people enjoy trying out new hairstyles and being able to style their hair however they want after they have had a hair transplant.

After a hair transplant procedure with the Toronto Hair Transplant Clinic, patients are provided with post-op instructions that detail how they can take care of the transplant area for the first week post-op. For example, a patient should not rub the transplanted area for the initial 7 to 10 days because that is the most crucial time for the transplanted follicles to take hold. This includes making sure that you avoid any direct shower pressure to the area as well as combing or blow drying for the first week.

Camouflaging Products

If you have a history of skin allergies or conditions, you should also follow the post-op instructions very closely. If you start to see any type of skin irritations, such as pimples or itchy redness, it is a good idea to contact Dr. Torgerson. If an area does get an infection caused by poor grooming and aftercare, the infection can kill the transplanted grafts.

Patients are generally advised to wait until their healing is complete because some of these types of products may cause a burning sensation. Camouflaging agents like Toppik fibres can be used 2 to 3 weeks after a hair transplant, and they can be very effective in concealing the transplanted area. Some hair transplants may be advanced enough that they need to have multiple stages. Camouflaging agents also work great for temporarily disguising certain areas that are just waiting for the next procedure.

Styling Your Hair

Choosing a hairstyle that adds more volume to your hair is always best if you are thinning or bald in any area of your scalp. A common hair style after a hair transplant is combing the hair backward. The longer your hair grows, the more coverage you will have. When hair is combed backward, it can be helpful in covering the thin areas behind the transplanted hairline. Using gel or wax to hold your hair in place is a good choice. Also, finding a hairstyle that involves blow drying your hair is a great way to make it seem like you have more hair than you do. It is always a good idea to find a stylist that you like and trust to give you their professional opinion on what can be done to use the hair that you still have to maximize the appearance of hair in areas that are lacking.

We work with top hair stylists before and after a hair transplant to make sure that our patients get the best care and results possible.
