Laser Hair Restoration

Low-level Laser Therapy (LLLT)

Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is one of the latest treatments for hair restoration that uses low-power lasers or, in some cases, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to help stimulate hair growth. Laser therapy is a painless, non-invasive treatment that does not require an unreasonable commitment of a patient’s time. Low level laser technology has shown promising results when used to treat arthritis, joint disorders, hair loss, chronic pain, and many other ailments. Low-level lasers are now being used with great success by increasingly more hair loss patients, and they can also be used in conjunction with other hair loss treatments.

Cold lasers also work to counteract the negative effects of the DHT hormone by stimulating the cellular metabolism involved in hair growth. DHT is the leading cause of genetic balding and is the cause of male and female pattern baldness.

The History of LLLT

Lasers were first discovered as a possible medical treatment for hair loss in the 1960s and their potential uses have been increasing ever since. A series of experiments by a Hungarian scientist using lasers on mice were conducted near the end of the 1960s.

The mice were shaved so that it would be possible to see if the lasers would cause any type of cancer. The mice were split into two separate groups to track the results correctly based on laser treatments and non-laser treatments. The test proved that lasers would not cause cancer, but the test also had an additional result. The mice that received the laser treatment were growing the hair back faster than the mice in the group that did not receive the laser treatment. This was the first experiment involving LLLT for hair loss.

Low-level laser therapy, also known as “cold laser”, is used to stimulate hair growth by emitting low-level laser energy with a wavelength of 650 nm. The red light that is emitted from the device being used is a cold laser that does not produce any sensation of pain or discomfort.

How Does LLLT Work for Hair loss and When I Will See results?

The laser light works by stimulating the epidermal stem cells that play a significant part in the follicular regeneration process. It helps improve blood circulation to the treated hair follicles while also reducing inflammation, allowing for the delivery of more nutrients and oxygen. This provides the follicle every possible condition necessary to thrive.

“Rome was not built in a day”, and the same can be said with hair restoration. The hair loss took years to happen, and therefore the restoration will take time as well. Cold laser therapy will help the follicle heal, become stronger, and grow. The process will take months to show any results and at least 9 months to a year to see any visible results. Results will vary from patient to patient.
