Here Are the Top Reasons You Need to Know

PRP hair loss treatment is big news, but have you heard all that it can do? Once considered to be sci-fi fantasy, regenerative medicine that is 100% natural is a reality today thanks to platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections. Though it’s been widely studied and implemented in various areas of medicine for decades, this emerging technique in cosmetic, restorative medicine is just catching on in North America. As a result, PRP hair treatment could be right for you if you’re looking for a drug-free, surgery-free hair loss solution. Here we give you the top reasons you need to know what PRP hair treatment is.

Your body’s cells contain the power to heal you, and hair restoration experts have harnessed a concentrated rapid growth and healing formula directly from their patient’s bodies. Even better news: it’s fast, easy, and painless. Let’s take a closer look at PRP hair treatments.

PRP hair and scalp treatment in Toronto is a multi-purpose powerhouse

This non-surgical therapeutic option helps men and women of all ages and backgrounds get the thicker, stronger and healthier hair growth they want, without drugs or surgery. The PRP hair treatment is done in-office and takes roughly 30 minutes, with no downtime at all. As simple as it is, the many uses for this versatile treatment are impressive. At the Toronto Hair Transplant Clinic (THTC), our clients use PRP to condition and heal the scalp, to help revive dormant hair follicles, to heal more rapidly after a hair transplant surgery, and to promote thicker, longer hair. PRP + hair transplant combos can bring about faster hair growth after FUE (follicular unit extraction) hair transplant as well.

What’s the science behind PRP hair treatment?

When your body is injured anywhere, platelets in your blood rush to the area to begin signalling the clotting and repair work that needs to be done. Cytokines and various growth factors signal new blood vessel formation, the reduction of inflammation, and the triggering of necessary cell proliferation. That’s why extracting and concentrating these potent healing agents has been a useful tool in surgical and regenerative medicine since the 1970s.

Surgeons first used PRP injections to help patients heal after cardiac surgery. PRP went on to provide rapid tissue regeneration and recovery after facial and dental surgery, sports injuries, and more. In the early 2000s, the magic of PRP moved into the cosmetic world, where it wowed celebrities and social media stars with “vampire facials” and various beauty applications. Aside from the shock factor of using “blood” as a source product, the well-founded science and extremely safe product formulation and application made PRP much less scary than it sounded. Only a patient’s own blood can be used, making this an autologous and safe procedure. In fact, there’s virtually no risk of infection, rejection, or allergic reaction common for synthetic, animal-based, or pharmaceutical treatments.

How does PRP hair treatment work?

A small sample of blood is drawn from the patient’s arm, then spun at high speeds in a centrifuge device. The platelets are separated from other blood components, and a clear-ish serum remains. This plasma solution is drawn into fine syringes, then injected superficially across the scalp where thinning areas are found.

Though studies are ongoing for this application, PRP hair treatments are believed to repair damaged or miniaturizing hair follicles and to trigger more rapid cell production within hairs. The growth factors in PRP stem cells directly applied to hair roots under the surface mean a potent dose of nourishment and rapid, visible results.

PRP injections also stimulate collagen production and angiogenesis (the formation of new blood cells to bring oxygen and other nourishment to the roots). When applied after hair transplant, PRP can speed up the recovery time, because it helps reduce inflammation. It can also boost follicles out of the resting phase and into the anagen (growth) phase faster.

When people invest significant finances in a surgical hair restoration procedure, every valuable hair follicle matters. The addition of PRP hair treatment in combination with transplantation helps ensure the best return on investment.

Most patients start to see benefits around one month after their first treatment. At the THTC, we usually recommend a series of 3 or 4 sessions spaced roughly one month apart to lay a strong foundation of growth. Additional treatments at 6 months or 1 year are beneficial for the long-term maintenance of a healthy scalp and lush hair.

A single PRP hair treatment costs $1,200 plus HST, and a package of 3 will be just $3,000 plus HST (a savings of $600).* Note that prices are subject to change over time.

You may be wondering what you can expect when you schedule your PRP hair treatment. There is some minor discomfort from the shallow scalp injections, yet very fine needles are used. And with the pre-application of a skin numbing agent, most people experience little to no discomfort. You’ll rest comfortably on a soft treatment bed, and your practitioner will describe the treatment while answering any questions that you have. Since your platelet-rich plasma is created from your own blood, there’s never any need to worry about complications afterwards. You’ll be able to return to work, but you may be advised to avoid extreme temperature changes or cardio workouts for the following 12 hours.
