PRP Hair Treatment: Not Just for Vampires Anymore

Not Just for Vampires Anymore

The power of PRP hair treatment is in your blood, but that’s not as creepy as it sounds. Want to fight hair loss the natural way? Are you like many people seeking a non-surgical hair loss remedy and prefer not to take hair-growth drugs? Read on to learn why platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP) hair treatment for balding isn’t for vampires, but could be just right for you.

Platelet-rich plasma therapy hair treatments for thicker, improved hair growth are in demand at our Yorkville practice. This process was nicknamed the Vampire Facial in the past when the Kardashians and other Insta-famous personalities raved about their PRP facials online. The shock factor of talking about “blood used for beauty” can grab attention and may sound strange. But we assure you, the extensive scientific study and successful track record behind this biotechnology have been long established in the medical world.

What began as regenerative medicine post-surgery then moved into sports injury recovery and cosmetic skin treatments. In recent years, it’s launched some of the most promising hair growth therapy available anywhere. In Canada, PRP for hair is taking the hair transplant industry by storm. The Toronto Hair Transplant Clinic is pleased to offer it to our FUE and non-surgical clients.

How is it done?

PRP is made from a component of your blood called plasma and the platelets that help you clot and heal. A comfortable, in-office procedure allows your practitioner to extract a little blood, prepare it, then inject it into your scalp. Only 20 ml to 40 ml of blood will be drawn, a few tablespoons in most cases. A centrifuge quickly spins the blood, which naturally separates red and white cells, platelets and plasma. Just the clearish-yellow PRP solution will be drawn into a syringe, leaving other cells behind. The formula is injected superficially at the hair roots in an even pattern of roughly 1-inch separation. Tiny droplets of plasma can directly affect the hair roots where they’re placed, and the serum can be applied topically too.

Why are just the platelets used to treat your hair loss?

Just the platelets are used because they contain healing properties and growth factors that stimulate the production of new cells and new blood vessels, rapid growth, and reduced inflammation.

PRP hair treatment has been used for decades already to stimulate the healing of wounds, promote robust new tissue formation, and reduce swelling after injury or surgery. Recently, hair transplant surgeons aiming to speed up their patient’s recovery time have found that the treatment not only diminishes inflammation fast, but also encourages the faster growth of new hair from transplanted follicles.

Does this mean that PRP hair treatments are only for transplant recipients?

Not at all. PRP has been used to trigger hair growth among men and women with hair loss conditions like androgenetic alopecia (AGA), alopecia areata (AA), and traction alopecia due to tension.

While the specialists at the Toronto Hair Transplant Clinic will often recommend this natural growth accelerator to complement surgical hair restoration, increasingly we’re administering the simple hair growth solution for people of all ages who don’t want a hair transplant. For some, it’s too early in their hair loss experience to intervene surgically. For others, mild shedding or brittle, weak hair prompts them to seek surgery-free, drug-free ways to improve hair health. The beautiful thing about PRP hair treatment is that it uses your body’s healing and growth mechanisms to get results without the addition of toxic or risky ingredients.

How safe is PRP?

We’re glad you asked. PRP hair treatments are autologous. That means they use only natural material taken from your body — nothing synthetic and no animal-derived ingredients. Therefore, the risks of infection or rejection that may come with other treatments aren’t a concern here. Provided that you undergo PRP hair injections with an experienced, qualified practitioner, your treatment will be very safe and require no downtime. Patients can head home after their quick PRP session. Aside from minor scalp sensitivity, they won’t need any care, medication, or time off work. That’s right! Unlike more invasive procedures, when you undergo PRP scalp treatment, no one will know except you.

Studies are ongoing in this exciting new area. The concentration of platelets, for instance, has typically been 4 to 5 times the average blood concentration. In advanced studies, higher percentages of platelets are being researched for efficacy and results. Related to hair growth, more research is needed to determine exact, predictable, and consistent protocols, yet studies so far have shown improved hair density, thicker hair shafts, and the appearance of thicker hair. People treated with PRP scalp injections who suffer a genetic predisposition to shedding have reported that their hair loss slows after PRP hair treatments.

Many promising and visible results are reported by patients who undergo even one session. The typical recommendation for hair loss clients is to have a series of 3 or 4 treatments spaced roughly one month apart. This allows the solution to interact with the hair follicle throughout various stages of the growth cycle.

PRP hair treatments have been convenient and long-lasting so far. Compared with medications like finasteride (Propecia or Proscar) that need to be taken daily, a few PRP sessions followed by a maintenance dose once or twice per year requires less daily hassle for the patient. In the case of popular hair loss medications, any results noted tend to disappear once the treatment stops. Conversely, PRP patients often keep and enjoy their results for years, and minimal maintenance is needed.

*Note that individual body chemistry, health, and other factors influence the quality and efficacy of PRP.

PRP is safe for men and women

Unlike Propecia and other drugs, PRP doesn’t affect hormones, which makes it safe for everyone. Studies for PRP effectiveness involve both sexes.

Please feel free to contact the Toronto Hair Transplant Clinic for a hair assessment to get started on your hair restoration journey. Good candidates for PRP treatment include people who can’t or don’t wish to take medications. The severity of hair loss is a qualifying factor, as there must be live hair follicles in place to respond to the procedure. Where baldness is advanced or severe, the effects of PRP will be minimal if at all present. You’re welcome to meet with our experts and learn more.
