We realized after a certain period of time of charging per graft that it was just not a fair way of charging for this procedure. Because it is impossible to determine the exact number of grafts, someone was basically always going to feel a little “ripped off”.
For example, if a patient was expecting 2,000 grafts, but we were only able to harvest 1,800 grafts safely without over-harvesting, we would owe the patient the balance of what was missing from the expected amount even though the results would still be pretty much the same. This was what we did and what was the right thing to do in our opinion.
However, the other side of the coin was when we would charge the patient for only 2,000, but we would then be able to harvest 2,200. After they had been sedated and were already halfway through the procedure, we couldn’t approach the patient at that point to ask them for the outstanding amount of the extra 200 grafts. So we realized that it was not a win-win situation.
For that reason, at the Toronto Hair Transplant Clinic, we set realistic expectations for the final result of FUE hair transplants. We then charge our patients for the cost of what will be necessary to reach that result.
Some cases, such as for African-American patients or revision transplants for previous hair transplant patients, may cost more because they are typically more challenging for our FUE hair transplant team.
