What to Expect After Your Hair Transplant Procedure

After Your Hair Transplant Procedure

Hair Transplant Treatment

Many individuals feel that their hair is an important part of their identity. As a result, hair loss can have a detrimental effect on your self-esteem, which may leave you searching for a solution. Although there are a number of over-the-counter treatments that claim to stimulate hair growth, the results will often range from subtle to disappointing depending on a wide variety of ingredients and quality. If you are troubled by baldness or thinning hair, a hair transplant procedure may be the reliable solution that you are looking for. While you will know the source of your hair transformation, those around you often will not be able to pinpoint the difference. According to the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, 60% of men cannot detect a hair transplant.

Before proceeding with the treatment, it is important to have realistic expectations and a clear understanding of what to expect. Our staff will review detailed post-operative instructions with you to ensure that you are well equipped to ensure optimal results.

Is Recovery Painful?

For A Long Lasting Solution

Following the procedure, most patients experience temporary tenderness and/or numbness in both the scalp and the donor area. This will subside within 3 to 7 days and can be treated with over-the-counter pain medication if desired. An antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drug will be prescribed to prevent infection and reduce swelling, helping ensure that you are kept comfortable following the procedure. You should expect that the treated area will appear pink and may crust or scab for 7 to 10 days.

Depending on the type of transplant technique used, within 2 weeks the sutures will begin to absorb and the knots placed at the ends of the sutures will fall off or, in the case of FUE hair transplant, you will not see any sutures or incisions at all. Numbness in the donor area will gradually dissipate within a few weeks. Each patient will heal at their own rate, so these timelines are approximations.

Some possible side effects include swelling of the forehead, particularly if the treatment area is large. Ingrown hairs may also occur as a result of the transplant.

Will I See Instant Results?

Hair Loss Treatment

You cannot expect to see instant, settled results after a hair transplant because time is required for the follicles to heal and resume normal growth cycles.  In fact, within the first 2 to 3 weeks after the surgery, you will lose some of the transplanted hair as hair follicles move from the catagen (transition) stage to the telogen (resting) stage. This is to be expected and is not a cause for concern. Approximately 3 to 4 months after the procedure, most patients notice some growth as hair moves into the anagen (growth) phase. Within 6 to 9 months, significant growth is evident. At that time, Dr. Torgerson will evaluate your progress and may recommend that you undergo a second transplant to improve results. Since balding is progressive, in some instances a second procedure is necessary to fully restore your hair.

Will Hair Transplant Surgery Help Restore My Confidence?

Although it may take 9 to 12 months to see the full results of hair transplant surgery, you will find that it is worth the wait. Hair restoration will help you look and feel like yourself again, leading to a more youthful appearance and renewed self-esteem. Nothing beats washing, combing, and styling your own healthy, strong, and natural hair.
