What to Expect After Each Hair Transplant Session

Hair Fall

Hair Transplant Treatment

You may already know that often more than one FUE hair transplantation session is required to see full, optimal results. But the time and patience required for this process is well worth it because the full, healthy head of real hair lasts a lifetime. After each procedure, Dr. Torgerson will evaluate your progress to determine whether an additional session is necessary to fully restore your hairline.

At the Toronto Hair Transplant Clinic, we understand that each patient has unique goals and needs. We are focused on providing personalized care, taking into account each individual’s age, gender, hair loss pattern, and donor area. As part of our commitment to providing individualized care, we will ensure that you are informed every step of the way so you know what to expect after each treatment.

Is Recovery Painful?

For A Long Lasting Solution

After each procedure, you may experience some tenderness in both the donor and recipient areas. This soreness can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication and typically dissipates within 3 to 7 days of the procedure. You may also experience numbness in the treated areas, which may last several weeks following the surgery. You will be prescribed an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medication to help prevent infection and minimize swelling.

Are There Any Side Effects?

NeoGraft FUE hair transplant surgery is an extremely safe procedure. Consequently, the risk of side effects is low. While some swelling is to be expected, patients rarely experience more severe swelling of the forehead, particularly if the treatment area is large. This may result in puffiness of the eyes or temporary black eyes. Some patients, especially those with curly hair, develop ingrown hairs, which resolve themselves shortly after the treatment. A temporary decrease in scalp sensitivity is to be expected, but in rare instances can be permanent.

How Long Will Recovery Take?

Following each session, the treated area will appear pink. Typically, each graft crusts or scabs for 7 to 10 days. The micro holes created at donor sites and graft areas will close within a few days and require no sutures or wound care. While you will likely feel up to working right away, it is recommended that you allow yourself a week for your scalp to heal before returning to work.

As a result of the natural recovery and hair cycle, 2 to 3 weeks after the procedure you will shed a small percentage of the transplanted hair as the hair follicles go from the catagen (transition) stage to the telogen (resting) stage. After 3 to 4 months, during the anagen (growth) stage, you will experience new growth, which continues for several months. It is important to recognize that each patient is different and heals at their own rate, so these timelines are merely estimations.

It is imperative that your hair reaches the anagen growth stage before you consider undergoing a second hair transplant. Dr. Torgerson will follow up with you closely to evaluate the growth in both your donor and recipient sites to determine whether an additional transplant is needed and, if so, whether there is sufficient donor density for another transplant to be successful. We welcome you to schedule a consultation at the Toronto Hair Transplant Clinic to discuss your goals and expectations further.
