What is Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP)?

PRP Treatments

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) treatments are a 3-step medical procedure where a patient’s blood is drawn, processed using a centrifuge, and then injected into the scalp to help treat hair loss. PRP triggers natural hair growth and maintains it by increasing the blood supply to the hair follicle. These concentrated platelets also contribute to increased hair strand thickness. Platelet-rich plasma has a variety of uses and benefits. PRP therapy has been used since the 1980s for various treatments such as wound healing, including of injured tendons, ligaments, and muscles.

PRP Therapy is a 3-step process. PRP therapy for hair loss requires 3 initial treatments spread out 3 to 6 weeks apart. Maintenance treatments are required every 6 to 9 months.

The Process and Side Effects of PRP

Step 1

Your blood is drawn in the same way as it would if you were donating blood. Once enough blood has been drawn (22 ml), it is placed into a centrifuge and spun for the specific period of time necessary to isolate the platelet-rich plasma.

Step 2

Once the tube of blood has been spun long enough, we are left with the blood divided into 3 layers:

  • platelet-rich plasma
  • poor platelet plasma
  • red blood cells

Step 3

The platelet-rich plasma is drawn up into a syringe and then injected into the areas of the scalp where increased hair growth is needed. The side effects associated with PRP are minimal because it is your own blood being injected into your scalp. However, any treatment that involves injections still can carry the risk of side effects such as:

  • blood vessel or nerve damage
  • infections
  • minor scar tissue

There is also the possibility of having a negative reaction to the local anesthetic used during the treatment. We will assess each patient before their initial treatment to lower the risks involved.

How Much Does PRP for Hair Restoration Cost?

PRP therapy typically consists of an initial three treatments within a 3-month period, spread out every3–6 weeks. Single “maintenance” treatments are also recommended every 6-9 months afterwards. The cost is $1200 for a single treatment, but The Toronto Hair Transplant Clinic offers a bundle price of $3000+ HST for the initial three treatments and $1000 + HST afterwards. Most medical insurance plans consider platelet rich plasma treatments for hair restoration to be “cosmetic” and therefore will not cover any of the costs of the treatment. But we do recommend that you check with your insurance provider to see if PRP therapy might be covered for you.If you are concerned about your hair loss, there are a number of options, including medications like Rogaine and Propecia and, of course, FUE (follicular unit extraction) hair transplant surgery.

PRP is a great treatment for almost everyone who is dealing with any type of hair loss. Schedule a pressure-free consultation with the Toronto Hair Transplant Clinic today to see if you are a good candidate for PRP.
