Have you ever come across an advertisement from a clinic that not only offers a FUE hair transplant of 5,000+ grafts in one session, but also charges a fraction of the cost that other clinics charge? You might also come across advertisements that promote “unlimited hair extraction”. Someone who is looking for hair restoration may think “the more hair, the better”. But how many grafts can be extracted from the donor site in an FUE hair transplant?
Understand that there is a limited amount of grafts that can be extracted from the donor site. For the most part, it is possible to extract up to 5,000 follicular units, but not in one session. Your donor area contains anywhere between 12,000 and 20,000 follicles, which is equivalent to 3,000 to 5,000 grafts. If more than the recommended number of hair follicles is extracted, there will be obvious thinning in the donor area. Over-extracting the donor site will make the hair transplant results obvious, and the sudden thinning will be visible. You can undergo multiple hair transplants 6 to 12 months apart. However, to obtain a high success rate, you should not exceed 2,200 grafts per session.
