How Long Should Numbness Last After Your Hair Transplant Treatment?

Hair Transplant Treatment

Following your hair loss treatment in Toronto, you may have questions about numbness. Commonly, after a hair restoration treatment such as FUE hair transplant or strip harvesting, a temporary loss of sensation in the scalp or changes to scalp sensation may be noticed. The area most affected is usually the top of the scalp or directly in the follicle donor area. Below we discuss how long numbness should last after your hair transplant.

Hair Transplant Procedure

The scalp is filled with many tiny nerve branches, which normally provide great sensitivity to the scalp. When an incision is made in the skin or multiple micro punches into the scalp cause trauma to the nerves, the nerves may take some time to recover. Typically, if a nerve is cut or damaged during surgery, it will regenerate and grow back fully functional within a few months.

This is not always the case, however, and on rare occasions, some scalp sensation loss can take much longer to resolve or nerves may not fully repair. The risk of this occurring is much lower using the FUE (follicular unit extraction) method rather than strip harvesting (FUT), which involves a large incision and the removal of tissue.

The sensation does return to normal, but commonly that can take from 2 to 6 months. When the sensation does not fully return after 6 months, the patient may experience some small areas of minor numbness over the long term. This does not indicate poor circulation or any problem with the transplant at all. Though it can be troubling for people to experience patches of numbness, it is important to know that the healthy results from the hair loss treatment will not be compromised due to these rare cases of nerve damage.

Hair Transplant Recovery

When recovering from hair transplant procedures, it is common for patients to report a sensation of prickling, tingling, or itching in the scalp and the surrounding donor and harvest areas. This is a good indication of normal healing and the restoration of sensation, though it can be slightly uncomfortable. Though activity restrictions are quite temporary post-hair transplant, it is helpful for patients to be realistic about the length of time required for full recovery, including the full restoration of nerve function in the scalp.
