5 Tips About Hair Transplantation – Part 1

At the Toronto Hair Transplant Clinic, we are often asked to provide a simple guide to male hair transplantation. Here are the 10 main tips to remember if you are considering hair transplantation. These are based on the most common questions that Dr. Torgerson is asked during our consultations with patients who are experiencing hair loss. We genuinely feel that hair transplants are the most effective treatments that a man can have to restore his hair loss.

Know What Procedures Are Available

There are two common procedures used for hair transplantation. The Toronto Hair Transplant Clinic exclusively offers the FUE (follicular unit extraction) procedure. FUE is used to harvest individual hair follicles from the back and sides of the scalp, called the donor area. This is where the hair is strongest and most abundant. The hair here is also immune to the hormone DHT. This donor hair is then moved to the balding areas. The other technique is FUT (follicular unit transplantation). This procedure involves surgically cutting a strip of scalp from the back of the head with the hair follicles attached. The strip is then put under a microscope, and the follicles are removed and separated before being transplanted in a similar way to the FUE procedure.

FUE Has Advantages

In an FUE procedure, the follicles are removed individually using a punch that is smaller than 1 mm, so scarring is minimal, and the downtime is only a week at the most. This is a big advantage if you like to wear your hair short or shaved and have a busy life that you need to get back to without anyone knowing that you have had a hair transplant procedure. After 7 to 10 days, the evidence of a hair transplant procedure is pretty much all gone, and you can return to your normal life while waiting for your new hair to grow naturally.

FUT Causes Scarring

The scar with FUT is noticeable if the patient ever wants to wear their hair short. Some hair transplant doctors are really good at creating a very small scar, but it is still noticeable. It is an older technique, but still an effective one. This procedure does have its uses for people who would like a large number of grafts and don’t care about the scar because they don’t plan on wearing their hair short.

Get The Best From Your Hair Transplant

Dr. Torgerson sees all of his patients personally to plan exactly which areas will be restored with the transplanted hair. He looks at the pattern of a patient’s hair loss to assess how many grafts will be necessary and where they will be used to restore the hairline. Hair transplants are limited by the amount of grafts that are available. Patients need to have realistic expectations. While your hairline will be transformed, it may not be possible to get the hairline you had when you were a teenager. If the grafts are spread out too much, it doesn’t look right. Dr Torgerson will create a great, natural-looking hairline that will take years off of your appearance.
