Frequently Asked Questions About FUE Hair Transplants at The Toronto Hair Transplant Clinic

FUE Hair Transplants

We offer our patients the best and latest technology with our FUE hair transplants. An FUE hair transplant is when individual grafts are removed from the back and sides of the scalp and transplanted into the areas of hair loss.

Over the past five years or so, FUE has gradually become a better choice for hair transplants compared to the more traditional method of hair transplantation, FUT (follicular unit transplantation). FUE has become more popular because the scarring is less noticeable and the downtime is minimal, as compared to FUT. Patients will have some red pin pricks and scabbing in the areas of the scalp where the hairs are taken from and transplanted to, but these will go away within a week. With the strip-method procedure, a strip of the scalp is surgically removed to obtain the donor grafts. This linear scar can be covered up if you prefer to wear your hair long, but it can be seen if you cut your hair short or shave it.

The Most Common Questions

How much will it cost?

An FUE procedure can be slightly more expensive then an FUT procedure because of the amount of time and people necessary to ensure a great result. The typical cost is roughly $5 to $7 per graft. A quote will always be given at your consultation.

When will the transplanted hair grow?

The transplanted hairs will start to grow at 3 or 4 months, and the most noticeable growth will happen between 6 and 9 months. It will take a full year for all the transplanted hairs to grow. In the first few weeks after a transplant, the transplanted hairs will fall out. This is normal and to be expected. The most important part of the transplant is the follicle. As long as the follicles have been planted properly, the new hair will grow back, and it should provide a good covering for the balding area around 6 to 9 months. This process may take longer in some patients, but all patients should see the best results after a year.

How Long Will It Take Me To Recover From A Procedure?

We typically recommend that patients take a week off from work following their hair transplant procedure. After any surgical procedure, there will be a recovery period. You most likely will feel fine after 24 to 48 hours, but you may need to wait for the swelling to go down (at around 3 to 5 days post-op). You need to take it easy to make sure that the transplanted hairs get settled.

How long does the procedure take?

An FUE procedure will take only a single day. However, that day can last up to 14 hours for some patients. It is also mandatory that a patient have someone pick them up after a procedure. This is because we provide our patients with medications that will not only help with pain but will also make the day seem like it went by very quickly.

Will I have to shave my head?

It is necessary to have the donor area shaved so that we can properly harvest the necessary grafts. However, we do not need to shave the top of the head, and we also have other options available to our patients that will be discussed at your consultation .
