5 Tips About Hair Transplantation

Know What to Expect for the Operation

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic. Most patients are very relaxed when the grafts are removed and have even said that it actually feels like a day at the spa. Some are so relaxed that they fall asleep, while others listen to music or catch up on emails. Once the follicles have been extracted, sites will be made for the harvested grafts to be placed for the patient’s new hairline. The sites need to be made in such a way that they follow the natural angle of the patient’s existing hair. This is where skill and experience really matter. Dr. Torgerson is a facial cosmetic surgeon and an expert/artist at being able to create a new hairline that looks as natural as possible while blending perfectly with your existing hair.

Get a Realistic Number of Grafts Transplanted

We always recommend that patients limit their hair transplant procedures to around 2,000 grafts. We limit this amount, because anything over 2,000 to 2,500 grafts is considered a mega-session and the success rate of the procedure will start to go down after that. Any patients who have had a 4,000+ hair transplant have actually wasted close to 40% of their available grafts because the chances of any more than 60% of them growing are very slim.

Follow The Aftercare Recommendations

You need to treat your scalp with extreme care for the first week following a hair transplant. At the Toronto Hair Transplant Clinic, we recommend that you wear a buttoned shirt rather than a T-shirt. This is because taking off and putting on a pullover or T-shirt can dislodge the new hairs and ruin the chances of hair growing in that area. You will also need to be careful when you wash your new hair at first to make sure that none of the transplanted grafts come out. Within 7 to 10 days, the new grafts are pretty solid, and you can return to your normal routine.

Have Realistic Expectations For Hair Growth

The new hairs will start to grow back at around 3 months. It will generally take a full year before all of the new hairs grow in. The new hair will fall out 2 weeks or so post-operation. This is common and expected. The important thing is that the new follicles are established. From these follicles, the new hair will grow back in time, but it can be up to a year before your new hair transplant will look its best.

Choose the Right Surgeon

There are fears that a patient’s grafts can end up looking like doll hair plugs, thereby creating an unnatural look. This was definitely a valid worry 15 years ago when hair transplant techniques were not as advanced as today. Such worries are no longer relevant if you do your research and go to the right surgeon. Dr. Torgerson and the team at the Toronto Hair Transplant Clinic are experts at hair transplants.

Enjoy Improved Self-Esteem!

Hair loss can have a damaging effect on a person’s self-esteem. Studies consistently show that a person with a full head of hair is happier and more confident, and this has an impact on their personal relationships and their enjoyment of life.
