Proper Care After A Hair Transplant

You’ve just had your hair transplant procedure. What now? It is highly important that proper care be taken to ensure lasting results.

The most sensitive day of the whole post-procedure process for hair transplants is the day after. The first day following the restoration procedure will see your hair follicles adapting to their placement. They must be cleaned carefully. It is only safe to clean your entire head with your regular shampoo if you wait 5 days following the hair transplant procedure. When it does come time to shampoo your head, it is important to gently clear away all scabbing. If this process is done before 5 days have passed, there is a very real possibility of permanent damage to the transplanted hair follicles.

Rarely, if ever, are there complications following the hair transplanting procedure. It is possible to have some swelling, redness, or discomfort around the transplanted area. These are normal reactions and typically will subside quickly. There is rarely a need for antibiotics following hair transplant surgery because of the abundant blood supply to the scalp and the minimal risk of infection.

Side Effects

After A Hair Transplant

If there are any unusual or persistent side effects after your hair transplant surgery, it is important that you speak to a medical professional immediately. We also like to schedule 6-month and 1-year followup appointments to ensure that everything is going according to plan.

Remember that scalp hair does not grow all at the same time. Some hairs on your head are growing right now while others are resting and/or shedding. Transplanted hairs work in the same manner. The process of removing and transplanting donor hair generally creates a “shock” to the follicles as they permanently enter a resting phase. Most patients will shed all or most of the hairs in the grafts around 6 to 8 weeks following the operation.

Roughly 2 to 3 months following hair transplant surgery, the transplanted hairs will begin to germinate. Ingrown hairs might happen but should resolve on their own in time. At 4 to 6 months, transplanted hairs should start to re-grow rather visibly. At 6 months post-operation, approximately 40% to 60% of the transplanted hair should be visible. Initially the hair will be thinner and finer, but over time the length and density will mature. Full growth from transplanted hair is typically achieved in 12 months’ time, though in some cases, this takes up to 18 months.

Hair Regrowth

After Hair Transplantation

The process of waiting for your transplanted hair to grow in can be a frustrating and anxious experience to some. It is important to remember to be patient and that the regrowth process takes significant time. Whatever the immediate, initial results are, they do not necessarily indicate how successful the surgery was. To each person, hair regrowth happens at a different rate. Sometimes it may appear patchy or as though the hair on one side of the head is fuller than the other. As the regrowth process moves ahead, the hair should naturally balance itself out.
