Using Scalp Micro-Pigmentation for Scar Repair

What Is Scalp Micropigmentation Treatment?

Scalp micropigmentation is an option for people with hair loss. SMP works very well for men with advanced hair loss who are okay with always having their head shaved. Scalp micropigmentation can also be used to cover up and blend in scars on the scalp or previous scarring from hair transplants.
With a strip method (FUT) hair transplant, patients will be left with a linear scar from ear to ear. With an FUE (follicular unit extraction) procedure, patients can be left with barely visible white dots that are less than a millimetre in circumference. SMP works great at scar repair, blending those areas in with the surrounding hair so that the hair looks naturally denser.

Repairing Scars So That They Are Less Visible

There are many scar revision treatments available. Some treatments may involve changing the scar itself with a surgical procedure. An FUE hair transplant is also a good option for repairing scars. If the incision of the scar is indented, dermal fillers are an excellent alternative to smooth it out, whereas Kenalog can be used to flatten the scar. Dermabrasion and fraxel laser treatments will also do a great job at resurfacing scar tissue. One of the most effective techniques for camouflaging scars, however, is scalp micro pigmentation. If a patient is also willing to have an SMP treatment for hair restoration on the entire scalp and does not mind always having their head shaved, then SMP is the ideal option. To optimize the results, a mixture of various treatments will give the greatest results. We most commonly recommend that patients use a treatment to resurface and reduce the scarring and then use SMP to cover it up. SMP can be very helpful in a couple of ways. If you want to cover your entire scalp and therefore also hide the scars as part of that treatment, there are a few things to take into consideration beforehand. Be sure to find a qualified and experienced specialist to perform this treatment. The size, shape, and indentation of the scars on your scalp are also important factors. If the scar tissue is fairly flat and already quite thin, you may not need to do any preliminary resurfacing of the scar.

IS SMP The Right Choice for Me?

The pigmentation of the scar tissue will also be harder to predict because the tissue in that area will be different compared to the surrounding skin. Most patients will need to have several sessions, because the fading of the pigmentation will vary from person to person and from scar to scar. Most importantly, you need to have realistic expectations of what you want as a final result. Every scar is different, and each patient will receive their own personal and unique treatment plan. A realistic outcome will also be discussed at your initial consultation. If you are dealing with any level of hair loss or if you are looking for a natural-looking solution for the scars that you may have on your head, the Toronto Hair Transplant Clinic will have a solution for you. We offer many hair restoration and scar revision treatments for any of our patients. We will be able to determine the best treatment for you at your initial no-obligation consultation.
