What Are “Hair Systems” And How Do They Differ from Scalp Micropigmentation?

Hair Systems For Hair Restoration

For Scalp Micropigmentation

You may have heard of “hair systems” when researching hair restoration options. These are the modern version of hair pieces that have come a long way from the toupées we remember from decades past. Improved technology means higher-quality synthetic or real hair along with better glues and fasteners to keep the hair in place.

A hair system is certainly the fastest and easiest way to get an instant, full, thick head of hair. The look of a high-quality piece can be extremely realistic. There are a few drawbacks to this option, however. Thousands of dollars can be spent on a good hair system and back-up piece. Proper maintenance is also costly over time. The possibility of having it discovered makes many people anxious, and it is common for edges to come up or the piece to shift. Wearing a hair system can be difficult in hot weather and in climates where the weather is warm for most of the year. Or if you are a very active person who plays sports and sweats, this can make a hair piece not only incredibly hot and uncomfortable, but can loosen the glue and make it difficult to keep on. Your choice of social activities will likely be impacted.

What Are Hair Systems and How Do They Differ from Scalp Micropigmentation

Scalp Micropigmentation

Facial Symmetry

Many people who are partly or completely bald may think that a hair system is the easiest way to disguise that, but scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is an innovative, new approach that has people saying goodbye to uncomfortable and unreliable hair systems. Now you can enjoy the look of a shaved head or create the illusion of thicker hair where it is thinning.

Also known as cosmetic hair follicle replication, this technique involves placing tiny dots of semi-permanent ink designed for the face and scalp in the areas where your hair grows . . . or where it once did. The colours selected will vary slightly and match your natural colour closely. In areas of thinning hair, these tiny micro dots aren’t readily visible to the eye, but because they camouflage the scalp, it appears that hair growth is thicker. For men who are completely or almost completely bald, SMP creates the illusion of stubble and the impression that you shave your head by choice for style reasons rather than balding.

Dr. Cory Torgerson

Highly Specialized Plastic Surgeon

Dr. Cory Torgerson is a highly specialized plastic surgeon who focuses on the head and neck and has extensive knowledge in the area of hair transplantation and restoration. It takes a skilled hand and artistic eye to design a suitable hairline and to apply the pigment with natural spacing and pattern. On the day of the appointment, the patient is seated comfortably while the practitioner applies pigment to the scalp using specially designed instruments.

Generally, 2 or 3 sittings are recommended to layer slight tone variances and to touch up any areas requiring more fill. Scalp micropigmentation is painless and minimally invasive and requires very little aftercare. Results last 3 to 5 years, requiring touch-ups as the ink gradually begins to fade.

Androgenetic Alopecia

Everyone, both male and female, with androgenetic alopecia can be a great candidate for SMP as a fast, low-maintenance hair loss solution that places no restrictions on your lifestyle but increases your confidence so you can enjoy life more.
