Hair Camouflage Products And Techniques
Hair loss is something that a vast majority of the population suffers from. It affects men and women of all ethnic backgrounds. It is an $8 billion-per year industry that is growing as the technology and treatments get better and better. One of the ways people treat their hair loss is by using some method of camouflaging the areas of the scalp that are thin or bald. There are many types of hair camouflage that can be used. Some are better than others and really depend on what level of hair loss is being covered up.
Scalp camouflaging products use different methods to reduce the contrast of the skin colour of the scalp and the hair colour so a hair loss sufferer can disguise areas of thinning hair. This can also create the perception that hair is denser in areas where a hair transplant is not an ideal solution to the hair loss in that area. This is usually used for the crown or the middle of the scalp, where the amount of hair that can safely be taken from the donor area has been used strategically in the frontal hairline or more important places. A hair camouflage product is ideal for creating the illusion of a full head of hair when used correctly and in conjunction with other methods of hair restoration.
There are 5 different types of temporary products that are available: 1) hair fibres, 2) powder cakes, 3) scalp lotions, 4) scalp sprays, and 5) hair crayons. A more semi-permanent solution is SMP, or scalp micropigmentation. All of the products are available in different shades so that you can very closely match the color of your hair.
These are the two that I suggest as being the most effective.
Topical Hair Fibres
This product is used to make hair look fuller and thicker and is quick and easy to apply. It is sprinkled onto the areas of the scalp that are bald or balding, and the positively charged fibers bind to the hair that carries a negative charge. The most common brand of this form is Toppik, which can be found at most hair salons or salon shops. It is fairly inexpensive, and it will not stain or streak. But it can be a little messy, as it will wash out in heavy rain or when you go swimming. It can also leave small amounts on pillow cases at night when you sleep and sweat. But overall, topical hair fibres are a very good, low-cost way of adding density to specific areas of hair loss.
SMP (Scalp Micropigmentation)
This is basically a medical grade, semi-permanent hair tattoo that, when done correctly by an experienced and talented professional, gives the appearance of hair in areas that are actually bald. This works by tattooing what appear to be individual hairs the same as they would appear on a shaven head. The whole head can be done this way or only specific areas so that the overall appearance is amazing. The colour and shade of the ink is also matched to the patient’s hair colour. This treatment is a little more expensive, but it is also the most realistic and lasts the longest of any of the other hair camouflage products.
I would recommend either of these. The difference is mostly based on your budget and what results you feel are the most important to you.
