Hair Loss Caused By Hair Fibre Damage
There are quite a few conditions that involve hair loss caused by damage to the hair fibre. Some of these conditions may be from genetic defects that do not allow the hair shaft to properly form, while other conditions can be caused by external damage to the hair shaft. Most of these cases are rare, but here are a few of the more common types of this hair loss.
Traction Alopecia Or Trichotillomania
As far as what causes the hair loss, these two types of hair loss are basically caused by the same action. Hair is pulled out of the scalp, and an area of baldness is left behind. However, although they have the same result, they are both not caused for the same reasons.
Traction alopecia is caused by hair being pulled out due to extreme tension on the hair and the follicle for prolonged periods of time. This can be caused by tight braids, ponytails, and anything that might put unnecessary strain on the hair.
Trichotillomania is a condition that causes people to pull out their own hair willingly. This can include all hair found on the body. It is still unclear whether this is just a bad habit like biting your nails or if it is a more psychological disorder. People who are affected by this condition are usually unaware that they are even doing it at the time. They may actually begin doing it more often after trying to stop. This is a condition that is better treated by a therapist instead of a hair restoration specialist.
Overprocessing
This is the most common cause of hair loss caused by physical hair damage. Anything involving harsh chemicals such as dyes, perms, straighteners, and bleach will have a significant effect on your hair. If you do not use these treatments properly, they can have long-term and irreversible damaging effects on your hair. The more frequently you use these products, the greater the chances will be of your hair being permanently destroyed.
Physical process can also do damage to your hair. Aggressive brushing and any grooming process that puts physical stress on the hair can cause the cuticle to break down. Even overuse of a hair dryer will damage your hair.
Treating this type of damage to your hair can be very difficult. The best treatment is to cut off the damaged or “split ends” and seek professionals to perform these procedures.
