Healing in the Donor Area

The area located at the back of the scalp is called the donor area because that is where the grafts are taken from for the FUE hair transplant. The SmartGraft technology uses a 1-mm or smaller punch to extract these grafts, so the healing time is minimal. Most patients will be almost fully healed in this area within 7 to 10 days. The hairs around these extracted grafts will also grow back around that time, so the area will have almost no signs of a hair transplant within the first 2 weeks. It is common though to still have the occasional sharp pain for a few weeks.

 

Healing in the Recipient Area

The recipient area is where the transplanted hairs are moved to. It is very important to be extra cautious with this area where the grafts are placed for the first 7 to 10 days. There will be scabbing, and the patient should be careful not to do anything that may rub the grafts loose. Patients of the Toronto Hair Transplant Clinic will receive a spray-on shampoo to help keep the area clean without having to rub shampoo on. After 10 days, the patient can wash their hair using the regular routine of shampoo and conditioner. It is common to feel some numbness in this area for a few weeks as the transplanted grafts are settling in.

 

Hair Growth

The transplanted grafts will have hairs in them that are expected to fall out within the first 2 to 3 weeks. This is totally expected, and the transplanted follicles will grow brand new hairs for most patients around month 3 or 4. Everyone is different, however, and some patients may not grow new hairs for up to 6 months. Dr. Torgerson and the Toronto Hair Transplant Clinic team will monitor the progress during follow-ups to make sure that our hair transplant patients get the best results. The SmartGraft technology uses a storage system for the harvested grafts that allows them to stay as viable as possible before being transplanted. This results in a 94% take rate. This means that for every 100 hairs that are transplanted, 94 of them will survive and grow. The most important thing that a hair transplant patient needs is patience. The full results of a hair transplant will not be seen until after a year.
