Statistics & Demographics On Hair Transplantation
Over the years, hair loss treatments have evolved dynamically. As technology evolves, so too does our ability to perform successful, natural-looking hair restoration procedures in our Toronto hair transplant clinic. As this technology improves, the social stigma that hair restoration surgery once carried has all but vanished. The data that has been collected by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) over the past 10 years shows a dramatic increase in surgical hair restoration procedures performed worldwide. Between 2006 and 2015, the number of hair transplant recipients increased by 76%! Keep reading to learn more statistics and demographics on hair transplants . . .
Hair Restoration By Gender
While hair transplant surgery can be beneficial to anyone seeking to restore their hairline and/or volume, studies conducted by the ISHRS have revealed that the majority of hair restoration procedures performed worldwide are performed on men. However, as the notion of restorative hair treatments becomes more socially acceptable as simple aesthetic maintenance, there has been a steady increase in the number of female hair transplants recipients worldwide. ISHRS records show a 1.2% increase in female recipients of surgical hair restoration procedures from 2008 to 2015, and an 11.6% increase in female recipients of non-surgical hair restoration procedures.
The Average Age Of Hair Transplant Patients
In studies conducted by the ISHRS in 2009, 2011, and 2015 the ages of patients seeking surgical hair restoration options remained within a consistent range: 30 to 49 years old. The majority of young recipients were men, and further ISHRS data confirms that women tend to wait until later in life to opt for hair transplant surgery. Another ISHRS study established in 2011 that hair transplant surgery can be safely performed on men and women between the ages of 22 and 65.
Trends In Procedures
Though non-scalp procedures have increased in regularity, surgical hair restoration for the scalp continues to dominate the industry, making up 89.1% of surgical procedures conducted in 2014, a slight decrease from 92.9% in 2008, according to the ISHRS. Over the years, there have been a variety of surgical hair restoration procedures developed and practiced. The FUT (follicular unit transplant) method was the most commonly performed procedure in the industry. However, the 2014 census shows that FUE (follicular unit extraction) is gaining momentum, seeing a 51% increase over the results marked in ISHRS’s 2012 survey. These results jumped from 32.2% to 48.5% in the span of two years.
