Milestones In The Development Of FUT & FUE
Both FUE (follicular unit extraction) and FUT (follicular unit transplantation) have developed considerably as surgical processes in recent years. Now Toronto FUE hair transplant specialists are able to achieve transformative results to ensure that hair loss patients regain a semblance of their youth and build their confidence. In addressing FUE and FUT processes, it’s important that patients have a clear understanding of how the treatments were developed and of the steps involved in achieving the most recent breakthroughs. To help provide clear insight on the hair transplant process, our Toronto FUE hair transplant expert Dr. Torgerson will showcase milestones in the development of FUE and FUT.
1995 – The First Paper On Follicular Unit Transplantation
In 1995, Dr. Bernstein and Dr. Rassman first highlighted the potential benefits of their FUT process. Their paper highlighted FT (follicular transplantation) as a way of using naturally occurring individual follicular units in large numbers to ensure effective transplantation results. This was the first known use of the phrase “follicular unit”, which is now a common term throughout the transplant industry.
1998 – FT Becomes FUE
In 1998, the expert behind the hair loss treatment innovations, Dr. Bernstein led a group of professionals to establish the language and the standards for small graft transplants. This process works to differentiate FT and FUE, and thus follicular transplantation became known as follicular unit extraction going forward.
2002 – Dr. Bernstein And Dr. Rassman Highlight How To Correct Outdated Techniques
One of the most critical steps for many patients attempting to undergo FUE in its earliest forms was to correct the errors made when trying to complete hair transplants with outdated techniques. In 2002, Rassman and Bernstein detailed repair strategies for correcting the problems associated with earlier techniques. Their paper instructed specialists on how to minimize scarring and maximize hair restoration during the surgical process.
2002 – FUE Is Honed
Later in 2002, Bernstein and Rassman started honing the FUE process to maximize the results achieved by individual patients. Their 2002 paper “Follicular Unit Extraction: Minimally Invasive Surgery for Hair Transplantation” has been credited with popularizing the use of the FUE process in the United States. This paper was also noted as the first time that the specialists had created a test to determine which patients were appropriate candidates for the procedure. It was a process that helped save time for both specialists and their patients before and during treatment.
2004 – The SAFE System Is Introduced
The SAFE System was designed to decrease the damage to the follicular units during the implantation process. Until its development, specialists often found that they were limited by the number of usable units during the implantation. This meant that often patients weren’t able to achieve their ideal results in terms of full hair growth. SAFE provided the basis for using an instrument that combined sharp and blunt dissection for removing follicular units from the scalp, thereby minimizing damage.
