How Does FUE Hair Transplant Work?

What Does FUE Involve?

Hair Restoration

FUE Hair Transplant removes hair follicles that are healthy and robust from donor sites on the scalp (typically the sides and back of the head) and transplants them to the balding areas of the head. The donor follicles, also known as grafts, are grafted in one-by-one into the scalp. Choosing a reputable and experienced clinic to have your hair restoration completed at is important, because the aesthetic plan for the angle and direction of the re-planted hairs in re-establishing your hairline can positively or negatively affect the aesthetic outcome of the procedure.

The popularity of the FUE method is soaring because it does not require whole strips of scalp to be excised and the hair grafted out of them. This was how hair transplant was done in the past, and although some locations will still offer it, the strip method is considered antiquated because of the advancements that FUE technology has brought to the table.

As each follicle is selected from the permanent hair zones of the head, it means that these transplanted hairs are resistant to DHT –the hormone responsible for hair loss on the front and top of the scalp, commonly known as male pattern baldness.

The basic principle behind FUE hair transplant is the same as its’ predecessors- uproot the hair from one area of the body and re-plant it in another area. However, what makes FUE so much more appealing to the candidate is that is has the ability to deliver far more natural results with less downtime and less overall pain.

FUE Procedures

How long does FUE take? Is FUE painful?

The typical length of time for an FUE procedure is around 6 to 8 hours. Patients will be given a local anesthetic to help with any pain. Therefore, most people tend to describe the procedure more as uncomfortable, rather than painful – simply because patients have to remain in our office for 6 to 8 hours for the procedure. Most patients end up listening to music, sleeping, or watching TV throughout the process.

Healing time will depend on the skin type and one can expect little scabs where the hair was harvested from. However, unlike the strip graft method, which required a surgical recovery of approximately 1 week and left an unsightly scar, the FUE method allows patients to be back into their normal routine within a few days. There are no sutures or stitches, resulting in a much faster recovery time. The after care is also very simple. Our centre offers CopperK after-care hair product packages to all our patients to help calm and soothe the scalp and help stabilize the hair.

How Long Does It Take To See FUE Results?

Permanent Uptake

The transplanted hair will fall out by weeks 2 to 4, but will begin to regrow sometime around months 4 to 6. By 9 to 12 months, there should be a permanent uptake and you should be able to see the full results. Remember, just like little seeds in a garden, not all hair follicles will survive the transplant, however, with FUE hair transplantation, the permanency rate is very high – over 90%.

FUE Hair Transplant Cost

Quote based on the cost per graft

Any patient considering FUE hair transplant will be paying for the procedure based on the number of grafts that are needed for the balding area. In most cases, the grafts needed range from 500 grafts to 2,500 grafts. Any more than 2,500 grafts would have to be completed in a second procedure ideally spaced 6 months afterwards. The Hair Restoration clinic will provide a quote based on the cost per graft multiplied by the number of grafts you need. This usually works out to be $5-$7 per graft. The nice benefit is that some follicle grafts can contain up to 4 hairs, which can help add density to the recipient region.
