If You’re Considering Laser Hair Removal, Here Is What You Need to Know

The Facts About Laser Hair Removal

Are you considering laser hair removal? There are some myths out there, but the facts below are what you really need to know.

1. The process sounds painful, but isn’t too bad

Laser hair removal works by sending the light of a laser through the pigment in the hair. This light is then converted to heat, which destroys the hair follicle and hair bulb. The laser treatment also uses a cooling mechanism (basically a constantly running cold blast of air right where the laser is pointing) that helps ease any pain or discomfort.

2. Patience is necessary

It can take 2 to 3 weeks following your first treatment to see a difference and 8 to 10 treatments to get the final result. Many patients will start to see results after 2 treatments. It is important that you attend all of your appointments, because your hair follicles are all growing at different stages and you want to make sure that you are getting each one during its growth stage.

3. Shave the area

The laser hair removal process can be affected by the hair. Nobody wants the burnt hair smell either.

Pre- And Post-Treatment

4. It’s pretty fast

Most treatments will take only 20 to 45 minutes, depending, of course, on the size and location of the area that is being treated.

5. Laser treatment can trigger more growth in some cases

Some treatments may actually stimulate growth. This is more likely when being conducted by untrained staff. With our professional and trained staff, the treatments are very effective.

6. You might need to switch up your beauty regime and products

Scrubs, glycolic acid, and retinol creams should be avoided for 2 days pre- and post-treatment. Moisturizers are recommended for any areas that are dry. It’s recommended that for a 2-week period before and after laser hair removal, you should also avoid chemical peels, and similarly, you should wait 1 to 2 weeks before applying a spray tan.

7. Laser hair removal can also help with ingrown hairs

Laser hair removal is a great treatment for ingrown hairs in certain areas. The process will actually encourage hairs to grow straighter and finer in most areas.

Is It Suitable for All Skin Tones?

8. Plucking and waxing should be avoided

Plucking, waxing, and bleaching will be counter-productive to the laser hair removal treatment. It is always best to stick to shaving the area prior to each treatment.

9. It works on all skin tones

Different settings are used based on the skin colour and pigmentation of the hair strand. The best results are when the hair and the skin colour have a good contrast.

10. You might need to return for “top-up” treatments

Most patients will notice a 90% permanent reduction in hair growth after their treatment is complete. However, fluctuating hormones can cause hair to grow back. If you are considering a laser hair removal treatment, it is always best to have a consultation with a trained expert who will be able to assess your condition and needs. Once a proper assessment has been done, you will have a treatment plan that is best for your particular needs.
