Myths and Facts of Laser Hair Removal and Waxing

The Most Popular Options for Men and Women

If you are wanting to get rid of body hair in certain areas, laser hair removal and waxing are the two most popular options for men and women. However, there are still some significant uncertainties associated to them. Some myths include that laser hair removal does not work for black people and that waxing can rip your skin off. Below we have outlined some of the most common myths as well as some actual facts associated with laser hair removal and waxing.

MYTH: Laser hair removal will not work on Black people.

Technological advances have come to the point now where it is safe to perform laser hair removal on anyone. Treatment plans will, of course, be based on each person’s needs, but with different laser settings and treatment plans, Black people can absolutely benefit from laser hair removal.

FACT: Laser hair removal will work better if your hair is darker.

The perfect candidate for laser hair removal is someone who has darker hair and a lighter complexion. The best-case scenario is when a patient has a higher contrast between the hair and skin tone.

Is It Painful?

MYTH: Laser hair removal is completely painless.

Laser hair removal is not extremely painful, but it does have some discomfort associated with it. Depending on the area that is to be treated, the discomfort can be better or worse. Pain tolerance treatments will be adjusted based on those areas.

FACT:

It will take multiple treatments to see a permanent solution to your hair removal.

Laser hair removal stunts hair growth by damaging the hair follicle over time. It typically takes 6 to 10 treatments spread out every 4 to 8 weeks based on the area. Hair on the face will require treatments more frequently. The body will require treatments a little more spread out.

FACT:

You will need to be shaved before your laser hair removal treatment.

Prior to your treatment, it is best to be clean-shaven in the area that you want to be treated. In most cases though, the area can be shaved just prior to the treatment by the professional performing the treatment.

Will Your Hair Grow Back Slower?

FACT: It is recommended that you allow hair to grow a little before getting waxed.

Most people don’t realize that although it is better to shave prior to laser hair removal, it is better to grow your hair a little bit before you get a waxing. The hair will be much easier to remove with a waxing treatment if there is actually something to grab hold of.

MYTH: Waxing will pull off skin as well as hair.

If done by a professional and correctly, waxing will pull only the hair, not the skin.

FACT: Hair will grow back slower after waxing and laser removal.

Hair that has been removed by using either laser hair removal or waxing will grow back slower then it will after being shaved. This is because the follicles are actually being affected; therefore, the hairs are waiting for a new growth cycle before they can grow again.
