Progesterone As A Treatment For Hair Loss

Progesterone

Hair Restoration Treatment

Alopecia refers to the medical condition of hair loss from the head or body. Hair loss is a natural process of our body. When some hairs fall out, new growth replaces them. Permanent hair loss occurs when hair loss happens but cannot be reversed, resulting in thinning or balding hair in any area of the body. Abnormal hair loss can occur because of many different causes, including stress, medication, and disturbance in hormonal levels or sleeping disorders. Today, many alternative treatments are being acknowledged for the treatment of hair loss, including a newer treatment of progesterone therapy.

Causes of Hair Loss

The most common form of hair loss is male or female pattern baldness called androgenetic alopecia. Skin disease can also be a major contributor of hair loss on the scalp as well as on other areas of the body. Premature balding can sometimes be caused by an inadequate diet that is lacking the proper nutrients. Nutrient deficiencies can cause a sudden increase in hair loss. Hair loss could also result from certain health problems, such as low iron and thyroid disease. Since hormones are responsible for the stimulation of hair growth as well as hair loss, fluctuations in your hormone levels will also have an impact on your hair loss.

Progesterone As A Treatment For Hair Loss

Progesterone As A Treatment

Progesterone is a sex hormone secreted by the female reproductive system, mostly by the ovaries in the second two weeks of a menstrual cycle. Progesterone is actually crucial to the health of everyone, regardless of their age or even sex, although it is most common in females and is mainly responsible for regulating the menstrual cycle in women. In fact, progesterone has been used to correct physiological changes that occur in a woman’s menstrual cycle.

Significance of Progesterone in Hair Loss

Progesterone is a very important hormone that is produced by the female body. Progesterone is also a precursor in the production of other important hormones, including estrogen and cortisone. Progesterone-based hormone therapies can also be effective in treating hair loss in women. Progesterone naturally inhibits the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which works to block the harmful effects of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

Progesterone will prevent the conversion of testosterone to DHT, a biologically active metabolite found in the body of people who are suffering with hair loss. DHT is considered the primary factor responsible for damaging hair follicles and therefore causing hair loss in patients with androgenetic alopecia.

Progesterone As A Treatment For Hair Loss

How It Works

Progesterone works as the body’s natural inhibitor of 5-alpha reductase. A high level of 5aR, or 5-alpha reductase, is found in human scalp hair follicles. Progesterone reduces DHT by blocking these 5-alpha-reductase. The hormone must be constantly present so that it can consistently fight against the 5-alpha-reductase. The production of DHT can come back if the treatment is stopped.

Progesterone Cream

There are a variety of hair loss products available at pharmacies, health food stores, and websites that incorporate progesterone as a main ingredient. Progesterone cream is considered an effective treatment for hair loss.
