What to Do If Your Skin Is Breaking Out After Your Hair Loss Treatment

Hair Restoration Treatment

Hair loss, or alopecia, can be upsetting, especially when you notice a significant amount of hair collecting in a hairbrush or in the shower drain. It is a condition that can affect all men, women, and even children. There are many different types of hair loss such as involutional alopecia, androgenic alopecia, alopecia areata, alopecia universalis . . . and the list continues.

Signs of hair loss or alopecia can be gender-specific. In men, thinning hair is typically first noticed in a receding “M” shape at the hairline and a horseshoe pattern that leaves the crown of the head exposed. Women experience hair loss a little differently. Signs of hair loss for females are usually indicated by general hair thinning, particularly at the crown.

Currently, many different hair loss treatments are more available than ever. There are short-lived and temporary solutions such as wigs, hair pieces, and hair weaving that restore hair to the scalp. Certain drugs or prescription medication are also an option for combatting hair loss. At the Toronto Hair Transplant  Clinic, we offer more permanent hair restoration treatment such as scalp micropigmentation (SMP) and the Toronto FUE hair transplant surgery.

Hair Follicles

Despite the variety of shampoos and medications that strengthen hair follicles and temporarily help with hair loss, the best method for hair restoration is a hair transplant. As mentioned, we offer the NeoGraft FUE method at our clinic, an advanced technique for transplant that offers many benefits over previous techniques. FUE stands for follicular unit extraction, which is the removal of existing hair follicles from donor sites. These are typically areas of the head where hair growth is uninterrupted, such as the back or sides. The hair follicles that are removed are referred to as grafts and generally contain 1 to 4 strands of hair. The hair grafts are then transplanted into a recipient site in a strategic manner to fill in balding areas, increase the density of hair in a certain area, and/or improve the overall appearance of the hairline.

Clients who have undergone a hair transplant will begin to see improvements in their hair aesthetics around 6 to 12 months post transplant. Some people who have received a hair transplant may notice bumps on the skin after treatment, resembling an acne breakout. This is a normal response that can appear for roughly 4 months post transplant when the new hair follicles have settled in and are beginning to grow. The bumps that look like acne are usually manifestations of inflammation and can occur in a few ways:

  • The sebaceous glands attached to the hair follicles secrete oil, which forms cysts under the skin.
  • Hairs are becoming ingrown.
  • The outward growth of hair is experiencing resistance from the skin and irritates the underside.
  • Some graft sites have been irritated from picking at scabs and crust.

Complications

Any of those situations can trigger the immune system to recruit white blood cells, making it possible to even notice pus emerging from the bumps.

Although these bumps closely resemble pimples, they are not the same. If you are a client experiencing this phenomenon, we advise you to visit our clinic for a thorough examination. We can prescribe medication to help control the formation of these bumps or we can surgically remove them, depending on the severity. While bumps are common, they do not occur in all clients. So if you are near 3 months post-transplant and do not see any bumps forming, don’t worry! Your transplanted hair is growing, and you will be able to enjoy your new and improved hair soon.
