FUT, FUE, DHI – Explaining Different Hair Transplantation Techniques

Receding Hairlines

Hair Restoration Treatment

Receding hairlines can have a significant impact on a person, especially young men, who are more likely than women to experience this problem during the prime of their 20s and 30s. Hair loss can lead to elevated stress and anxiety levels. People invest heavily in product and treatment solutions to limit further hair loss. Many topical treatments and products over-promise and under-deliver.

When significant hair loss is inevitable due to genetic predisposition and hormones, people seek cosmetic surgeons for hair transplant surgery. It is important to select the correct method of hair transplant that is suitable for your situation. First of all, a hair transplant performed using an outdated method can result in an unnatural look or a low survival rate of the hair follicles. In this article, we will briefly explain the differences between the FUT, FUE, and DHI methods of hair transplants.

FUT/FUE Techniques

For A Better Solution

Let’s begin with the FUT and FUE techniques. The main difference between the two techniques is how the donor hair follicles are extracted for the transplantation.

FUT (follicular unit transplantation) is less common these days, but it still has some applications. It involves a long, thin strip of tissue removed from the back of the scalp, where hairs are the most robust and resistant to balding. The surgeon then divides the hair follicles from the donor graft into tiny, single units under a microscope before the transplant. This is the cheapest method, as it can be performed quickly. But unfortunately, it leaves a long, linear scar that may or may not remain hidden well in the back of the hair.

In FUE (follicular unit extraction), the surgeon uses a special instrument to punch small circular incisions in the skin around a hair follicle and gently extracts it, leaving behind small open holes. These scars take less time to heal and in some instances are almost invisible to the naked eye.

Direct Hair Implanation

Lastly, DHI (direct hair implantation) is said to be a subtype of FUE that uses only punches of 1 mm or smaller to extract the smallest possible follicle graft from the donor area. The punches are so little that they barely cut into the skin, similar to an FUE procedure. The use of a DHI implanter provides more control over the depth and direction of hair follicle implantation. This allows the method to guarantee aesthetic results. Similar to the SmartGraft FUE, it provides the most natural-looking results with no scarring. The success rate of follicles transplanted by the DHI method is over 90% compared to 50% to 90% by other methods. This also means that fewer donor hairs are required for the procedure. And with minimal downtime, patients are able to go back to their daily routines within a couple of days.
