Hair Transplant Treatments

If you have been searching for a solution to your hair loss problem, you’ve probably realized that the variety of information and treatments described online can be overwhelming, and confusing. Let’s dispel some of the myth and mystery surrounding hair loss and highlight the encouraging truth about hair transplant treatments, which now provide optimal results.

Perhaps you are one of the nearly 85% of men or almost 50% of women who began experiencing thinning hair, hair loss or baldness at a young age. Many people will experience some hair loss by the age of fifty, but some people also start to notice thinning hair as young as 20. Brushing your hair and wearing hats will not cause baldness. Neither is it a sign of less virility or Testosterone in men. Smoking, however, has been linked to accelerated hair loss for men.

Male Pattern Baldness

Male pattern baldness is a common term used to describe the genetic or hormonal predisposition of men to lose their hair in common patterns at the top and back of the scalp. A hormone called DHT causes hair follicles to shrink. This recognizable horseshoe pattern including hairline receding at the top of the temples, predominantly affects males. Women, however, can also experience genetic and hormone related hair loss. This condition is termed androgenic alopecia and it causes noticeably thinning hair, a wider part at the top of the scalp or patches of baldness. With all the significance that society places on a beautiful, thick head of hair- it is no wonder that many men and women seek medical and surgical solutions for hair restoration. But what works, and where should you start?

FUE

Follicular Unit Extraction

Many advertised, topical formulas make false or misleading claims. Surgery can seem expensive and painful. In previous years, hair transplant treatment could involve complicated and painful procedures, which yielded mixed results and almost always resulted in visible scarring. Typically, a long strip of scalp had to be excised from the back of the head and after sectioning this into smaller grafts, those pieces were then surgically implanted in other areas of the scalp.

Hair follicles are delicate and aside from easily damaging them in the process, the pattern, angle, and technique for grafting often resulted in obvious borders and unnatural looking results. Hair transplant treatment in Toronto has come a long way. FUE or follicular unit extraction was the first FDA and Health Canada approved, follicular system for hair transplant. This has made it the industry’s leading technology and the least invasive way to perform hair transplants. FUE uses a state of the art pneumatic system to carefully extract individual hair follicles, which are healthy and robust from donor sites on the scalp. They are then transplanted to the balding areas of the head. These hairs are taken from the back and sides of the head where hair is thicker and considered to be genetically resistant to testosterone. This means that they will last- permanently transforming your hairline. The donor follicles, are meticulously grafted into the recipient areas of the scalp one-by-one.

Hair Restoration

FUE Equipment

One of the unique features of FUE is that it does not pull or twist to extract the graft, which preserves the health of the delicate follicle. Pneumatic suction assists with removing very precisely measured micro-lengths of the follicle. The small space left behind heals well within a few days so there is no sign of the hair removal. As well, only about 1/3 of the hair is selected throughout the overall donor site, leaving plenty of hair and no sign of change in those areas.

The FUE equipment is ergonomic and performs as an extension of the surgeon’s hand. This allows for precision and minimizes trauma to the tissues. As a result, the, “take rate” or rate of successful implantation is now up to 94%- much higher than with previous methods. The recipient areas will blend seamlessly and beautifully- eventually strong and ready to be brushed and styled as you would normally do.

Minimal Pain

Gone are the days of unsightly scarring, obvious “plugs” and painful recovery. When you visit the Toronto Hair Transplant Clinic, you’ll have minimal pain because of the careful technique and local anesthetic used to keep you comfortable throughout the process. The entire procedure may take up to 8 hours to perform. Patients are able to lay comfortably watching TV or listening to music during the process. This advanced method does not cause numbness of the scalp as in previous cases. FUE treatment in Toronto allows you to return to most regular activity within a few days. Minimal scabbing may occur and is considered normal. There are no sutures to remove and no linear, “donor strip” scar. Just healthy, new hair where you want it.

Facial Hair Transplants

FUE System

The FUE system is also very effective for facial hair transplants. Whether filling in a patchy beard or addressing hair loss in the eyebrow region, many people are now finding that hair transplants for the face can be easy, painless and permanently restore their confidence.

Your consultation with Dr. Torgerson at THTC will allow you an opportunity to ask questions about the hair loss you are experiencing in person and find out what treatment options are available for you. Not all people will benefit from the use of non-surgical, medical treatment such as minoxidil (Rogaine) and some types of hair loss are temporary or caused by other factors such as health or nutrition issues.
